There’s Something Magical About Cutting Your Own Flowers

There’s a special kind of magic that happens when you step into a field of flowers with the sun on your face and a pair of clippers in your hand. The air smells sweet. Bees hum softly around you. And for a little while, the rest of the world fades away. That’s the feeling we want every visitor to experience when our U-Cut Wildflower Field opens at Ort Farms.
We plant these fields every spring with more than just flowers in mind. We plant them so families can slow down, wander freely, and create something beautiful together. Whether you’re looking for a centerpiece for the kitchen table, a thoughtful handmade gift, or simply an excuse to spend a perfect summer day outside, the wildflower field is ready for you.
You Get to Choose Every Single Stem
The best part of the U-Cut experience is the freedom. There are no pre-made bouquets and no rules about what you can or cannot pick (within the designated cutting areas, of course). You get to walk the rows at your own pace and choose the stems that speak to you.
Some people go straight for the bright zinnias and sunflowers. Others prefer softer pastel blooms or interesting foliage. Kids often pick the tallest, brightest flowers they can reach. Couples carefully build matching bouquets. Every arrangement turns out different because every visitor brings their own creativity and mood to the field.
We encourage you to take your time. Bring a camera. Bring a friend. Bring the whole family. Or come alone for a quiet, restorative walk among the colors. Many guests tell us this is one of the most peaceful and joyful ways to spend a summer afternoon on the farm.
Turn It Into a Full Day on the Farm
A visit to the wildflower field rarely ends with just flowers. Most families turn it into a complete farm day. After you’ve cut your bouquet, stop by the Farm Market for fresh produce, homemade baked goods, and seasonal treats. Then cool off with a scoop (or two) of our homemade ice cream. The combination of fresh flowers, cold ice cream, and open farm air creates the kind of simple happiness that sticks with people long after they leave.
The wildflower field also pairs beautifully with our free Community Area. Kids can run and play while parents arrange their bouquets at a picnic table or simply sit and enjoy the view. It’s the kind of unhurried experience that feels increasingly rare these days.
And Then Come the Sunflowers

As the days grow slightly shorter and the first hints of fall appear, the farm transforms again. In late August our fields come alive with thousands of towering sunflowers for the annual Sunflower Trail.
This has become one of the most beloved traditions at Ort Farms. Guests walk between golden blooms that stretch high toward the sky. The sight is breathtaking — especially in the late afternoon light when the flowers glow. Families take photos, kids run ahead pointing at the tallest ones, and everyone leaves with a sense of wonder.
Many of our regular visitors make both experiences part of their yearly rhythm. They come in the heart of summer for the colorful wildflowers, then return a few weeks later to walk the Sunflower Trail. It creates a beautiful bookend to the season and gives families two distinct but connected memories.
Why We Keep Planting These Fields
Every year we invest significant time and care into planting and maintaining these flower fields. We do it because we believe farms should be places where people can reconnect with nature and with each other. In a world that moves so fast, a simple afternoon spent choosing flowers or walking among sunflowers offers something valuable: presence, beauty, and shared time.
When you cut a bouquet or walk the Sunflower Trail, you’re not just taking home flowers. You’re supporting a family farm that has been growing food and creating experiences for the community for generations. Your visit helps us continue doing what we love.
A Few Tips Before You Come
Wear comfortable shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting a little dusty or damp.
Bring your own clippers if you have them (we also have some available).
Check our website and social media for the exact opening date of the wildflower field and the Sunflower Trail, as both depend on weather and bloom timing.
Arrive earlier in the day on weekends for the best selection and a more relaxed experience.
Don’t forget a camera or your phone — the photo opportunities are excellent.
Plan time for the Farm Market and ice cream. Most visitors say it completes the day.
We Can’t Wait to See You Out There
The U-Cut Wildflower Field will be opening soon, and the anticipation is already building on the farm. Keep an eye on our website and social channels for opening dates, hours, and peak bloom updates. Then mark your calendars for late August when the Sunflower Trail returns in all its golden glory.
Whether you’re carefully selecting stems for a bouquet, walking through a sea of sunflowers, or simply enjoying a sunny day surrounded by color and open sky, something is always blooming at Ort Farms.
We look forward to seeing you in the fields and helping you create memories that will last long after the last petal falls.
