The Community Area at Ort Farms
Some of the best hours on a working farm are not on a ticket. Kids run. Someone buys ice cream. A goat gets more attention than the grocery list. That is what the Community Area at Ort Farms is for.
It is the free gathering place next to the market in Long Valley: wooden play structures, swings, farm animals, picnic tables, and enough grass to invent a game. You can come only for this, or you can land here after pick-your-own, a market run, or a Summer Saturday. During regular farm hours there is no admission to visit the animals and kids’ play area. Full-farm admission applies on pick-your-own festival weekends.
Free play, on purpose
The play area is built for real movement, not a theme-park queue. Children climb the wooden structures, use the swings, race the lawn, and usually find another kid who wants the same game.
Parents sit close enough to see everyone. Coffee or homemade ice cream from the shop is the usual companion. The point is unstructured time — the kind kids describe later as “the farm,” not as an attraction name.
The Community Area and play structures are part of daily farm life in season. Confirm current hours on the plan your visit page before you drive; seasonal opening (typically spring through fall for animals and play) can shift with weather and events.
Say hello to the animals
The animal area is why a lot of first visits turn into a second. Children get close enough to see working-farm residents, ask questions, and — when feeding is offered — take part instead of only looking through a fence.
This is a farm, not a petting-zoo franchise. Animals have off days. Staff and posted signs tell you what is allowed that afternoon. Stay on the visitor side of fences, do not feed anything that is not farm-approved, and wash hands after.
Picnic tables, ice cream, permission to stay
Tables are there so you linger. Pack lunch, grab something from the Farm Market, or take ice cream outside (the ice cream window typically opens later than the market and runs into the evening).
Bring a blanket if you want the field. Leave the table cleaner than you found it. On busy festival days, share space and expect company.
Open ground, not a maze of fences
Beyond the structures there is room to run, toss a ball, or take the photo you actually wanted. The openness is intentional. So is common sense: watch little ones near animals and parking, and do not treat crop fields or equipment lanes as playground.
Professional or staged photo sessions need permission and a prior arrangement. Family snapshots of your own kids in the Community Area are part of a normal visit.
Where the farm’s social life shows up
On ordinary weekdays this is a quiet hub. On event days it is the front porch: story time, bingo, line dancing, live music, Summer Saturdays, and other Kids’ Corner gatherings use this ground.
That is how regulars recognize each other and why a Tuesday play stop can turn into a Saturday tradition. Check the current activity calendar before you promise a specific program.

Parking. Spaces in front of the market are short-term (about 10–20 minutes) for shoppers. If you are coming for the Community Area, animals, play, or an event, park in the event / visitor lot in the fields to the left of the market. Parking is free.

Admission. No fee for the animals and kids’ play area on regular days. Festival / PYO weekends use full-farm admission for those ticketed activities.
Dogs. Ort Farms is dog-friendly. Leashed dogs are welcome in play areas, picnic space, and several fields. They are not allowed in the apple orchard or fruit-and-vegetable picking fields, and they cannot ride weekend hayrides. Pup cups are a thing at the ice cream window.
What to bring. Closed-toe shoes if you can get kids to wear them, wipes, a water bottle, sunscreen, and cash or a card. Wagons are allowed.
Pair it with the rest of the farm
A simple loop that works:
Park in the event lot.
Animals and play first, while energy is high.
Market or bakery.
Ice cream at a picnic table.
Pick-your-own or the Back 40 only if that is on your plan — and ticketed, if it is a festival weekend.
The Community Area still works if you never leave it.
Why this space exists
Ort Farms is a fifth-generation family farm. The Community Area is the part that is not a product: open access, on purpose, so Long Valley and Morris County families have a place that does not require a wristband every time a child needs to move.
When you sit here, you are using a working farm as a neighbor, not only as a store. That is the idea.
Pack the blanket or don’t. Grab ice cream. Let them run. Stay until the light changes.
