Fall Really Starts When the Apples Are Ready

There’s a particular feeling that arrives with the first cool mornings of fall. The air turns crisp. The light softens. And suddenly everyone starts talking about apples. At Ort Farms, apple season is one of the most anticipated times of the year — not just because of the fruit, but because of everything that comes with it.

For many families, picking apples here has become a yearly tradition that spans generations. Grandparents who once brought their children now watch their grandchildren fill bags with fruit. It’s more than harvesting. It’s a chance to slow down, work side by side, and create the kind of simple memories that people carry for years.

There’s Nothing Quite Like Picking Them Yourself

Our Pick-Your-Own Apple experience invites you to stroll through the orchard and hand-select apples right from the trees. There’s something deeply satisfying about reaching up, twisting an apple free, and placing it carefully in your bag. The smell of the orchard, the sound of leaves underfoot, and the occasional burst of laughter from nearby families all combine into an experience that feels timeless.

Different apple varieties ripen at different points throughout the season. Some are ready early, others peak later. This means every visit can feel a little different. One weekend you might find crisp early varieties perfect for eating fresh. A few weeks later the trees may be heavy with apples ideal for baking or cider. We always recommend checking our website and social media before you come so you know what’s currently available and at peak flavor.

The Fun Continues at the Market

After you’ve filled your bags in the orchard, the experience continues at the Farm Market. Here you’ll find even more fresh-picked apples, homemade apple cider, warm cider donuts, classic apple pies, caramel apples, and a rotating selection of seasonal baked goods. Many visitors make a point of buying extra apples and cider to take home, along with a few treats for the car ride.

There’s something special about cooking or baking with fruit you picked yourself. Whether you’re making a classic pie, packing school lunches, or simply eating an apple while it’s still cool from the orchard, the flavor feels different when you know exactly where it came from.

Make a Whole Day of It

Apple season at Ort Farms is designed to be more than a quick stop. During the fall we also host our Fall Festival, which adds family-friendly activities, countryside views, and plenty of seasonal atmosphere. Many guests spend several hours on the farm — picking apples, exploring the market, enjoying homemade ice cream, and soaking in the autumn landscape.

The combination of orchard time, market browsing, and open farm space creates a full sensory experience of fall. Kids often remember the freedom of running between the trees as much as they remember the apples themselves. Parents appreciate the chance to unplug and be present with their families in a beautiful setting.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go

  • Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes. You’ll be walking on uneven orchard ground.

  • Dress in layers. Fall mornings can start cool and warm up quickly.

  • Bring a camera or make sure your phone is charged — the orchard photos are always favorites.

  • Check the website the day before or morning of your visit for current varieties, picking conditions, and any weather-related updates.

  • Arrive earlier on weekends if possible. Apple season is one of our busiest times, and the best selection is usually available earlier in the day.

  • Plan time for the Farm Market. Most people leave with more than just the apples they picked.

  • Consider bringing a small cooler if you want to keep cider or other perishable items cold on the way home.

Why Families Come Back Year After Year

Year after year, we hear the same thing from returning guests: “We come for the apples, but we stay for the feeling.” That feeling is a mix of fresh air, shared activity, beautiful surroundings, and the satisfaction of harvesting something yourself. In a busy world, these kinds of experiences have become more valuable than ever.

When you pick apples at Ort Farms, you’re also supporting a family farm that continues to grow food and welcome the community season after season. Your visit helps us keep the orchards healthy and the tradition alive for future families.

We’ll See You in the Orchard

Fall is short, and apple season is one of its brightest highlights. Whether this will be your first time picking at Ort Farms or your tenth, we invite you to come experience it for yourself.

Gather your family or friends, grab your bags, and head into the orchard. Taste an apple right off the tree. Take a few photos. Laugh when someone drops one. And leave with more than fruit — leave with a memory of a perfect fall day on the farm.

We can’t wait to welcome you this season. We’ll see you among the trees.
